To prevent unauthorized access, I mostly password protect my PDF files. But once the content of the docs no longer requires secrecy, I decrypt the files so that I can quickly access them.
So far I had to entirely rely on third-party apps to remove password protection from PDF files on my iPhone. However, courtesy a really smart hack I can now get it done without using them. Walk along with me to discover how this trick works!
How to Remove Password Protection from a PDF File on iPhone and iPad
Step #1. Assuming your password protected PDF file is stored in the Files app on your iOS device. Head over to the location and open it.
Step #2. Now, you need to enter the password of the file and hit Go.
Step #3. Next, we are going to trick the app into believing that we will edit the file. Tap on the Markup icon at the top right corner.
Step #4. Next up, use the pencil icon or other annotation tools to do something. Then, tap on the undo button at the top right to get rid of the unwanted stuff.
Step #5. Finally, tap on Done at the top left.
That’s pretty much it! You have successfully saved the PDF file without password on your iOS device. Going forward, you will be able to open the doc without authentication.

As mentioned above, there are several third-party apps that can let you get rid of the password from PDF files on your iOS device with ease. We have tried out “Scanbot” and found it up to the mark.
You can use this app to not only decrypt but also encrypt PDFs. Though the app is available for free, you will need to upgrade to the pro version ($6.99) if you wish to use password encryption functionality.
Step #1. First off, download Scanbot on your iOS device. Then, set it up as desired. (When asked to buy the pro version, drag the slider to the Free and hit Don’t become a Pro.)
Step #2. Next, open Files app (or another app where you have stored the doc.) and go to the PDF file which password you want to remove.
Step #3. Next up, tap on the share button.
Step #4. Tap on Copy to Scanbot in the share sheet.
Step #5. Tap on the file. On the next screen, tap on Edit Pages at the bottom.
Step #6. Up next, tap on Decrypt in the popup.
Step #7. Finally, enter the password of the file and hit OK.
Sticky Note: In the end, tap on Cancel button at the top left to go back.
If you want to save the file to your favorite location or share it with others, tap on “Send to” tab at the bottom left corner. Then, choose the preferred option in the menu.
