You stash files on iCloud to avoid clogging your iPhone’s local storage. So you can download just what you need from there at will. But what happens when iCloud file download isn’t working? It means you can’t access your files just when you need them. That’s frustrating!

Like typical downloads, recovering your files from iCloud requires a stable internet connection. Further, your mobile data might’ve expired, or you’re in a low internet connection area. So try changing your location and re-initiate the download.
Files might fail to download from iCloud if your local storage is exhausted. To check your local storage:

The logic behind this trick is to reestablish a connection with the iCloud server. Although the iCloud Drive shouldn’t disconnect once active, some underlying faults might cause this. And worse, you might’ve even disconnected iCloud Drive in iCloud.
- Open your iPhone settings.
- Tap your Apple ID banner at the top → iCloud.
- Toggle on the iCloud Drive switch to enable it if it’s off.
- If the iCloud Drive switch is on, toggle it on and off to reestablish the connection to your files on iCloud.
So you can’t see the iCloud Drive option when you open your Files app? You’ve probably not configured it to access your iCloud Drive. So you won’t even have access to files you’ve stored on iCloud. However, even if iCloud Drive shows up in your Files, you might need to reconnect them to solve the download failure problem.
- Go to the Files app.
- Tap Browse at the bottom-right.
- Next, tap the more icon at the top-right (the three horizontal dots).
- Select Edit from the options.
- Then toggle on the switch to the right of iCloud Drive.
Hint: Turn on and off the iCloud Drive switch even if it’s active.

Signing out and back into your Apple ID might also help refresh the connection with your iCloud account and hasten downloads.
- Head over to your iPhone Settings.
- Tap your Apple ID banner at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Provide your Apple ID password. Then tap Turn Off at the top-right.
To sign back in, repeat the process above, but tap the Sign In option this time. Then provide your Apple ID and password.
VPNs and proxies might also prevent your files from downloading from iCloud. However, a network restore doesn’t only remove them but also refreshes your network, giving it a fresh start.
- Go to Settings on your iPhone → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings.
- Next, provide your iPhone passcode and follow the onscreen instruction to complete this process.
